5 Advanced Spatial Visualization - Part 2
Settling In
Data Storytelling Moment
Finding Project Partners
Today we will work on finding project partners.
Let’s look at the project overview.
Open the following Google Doc
Brainstorm
Spend about 5-10 minutes:
- Under Brainstorming, copy the template for a project idea (topic, question, data sources).
- Write up to 2-3 project ideas, without your name, in the document.
When you’ve written at least 2 ideas, continue working on HW2 and you could start HW3, if you’ve finished HW2.
Categorize
When directed by the instructor,
- Open the following Google Doc. Go to the Section of Project Categories.
- Copy the Category template below.
- As a table, find 2-3 ideas that seem to be related.
- Copy/Paste the idea text so within the Category.
- Change the header to an informative category name to the group of ideas.
- Don’t add your names to any categories yet.
Indicate Interest
Open the following Google Doc. Go to the Section of Project Categories.
Add your name to the project idea category you are interested in working on. You can add your name to multiple categories.
If you feel strongly about working with someone, please let me know.
If working with someone would be a barrier to your learning, please email me (no reason needed).
Group Work
We’ll work on starting Homework 3 today.
There are two parts.
- Part 1 introduces you to Census + shapefile data from the
tidycensus
package. - Part 2 involves working with very large spatial data, so you must think carefully about the computational efficiency of the tasks.
Reflect
Reflect on today about any of the following:
- What was challenging and why?
- What strategies, associations, insights helped things click today?
After Class
- Start thinking concretely about your course project topic. Project Milestone 1 is coming up in few weeks.
- Start looking for datasets to see what might be feasible. Think about who you would like to work with.
- Take a look at the Schedule page to see how to prepare for the next class.
- Finish Homework 2 and continue working on Homework 3.
